Career query of the week

An interesting question from a software engineer who wants to study filmmaking abroad...:

I m a software engg. Age is 26. I am very much interested in doing FILM Making (Direction) Course & making my career in this field out of india, preferably in US or Europe film industry or television industry.

Now I wud like to know what is the way I can proceed in this direction.

Q 1- I want to take admission in some good film making college in US or EUROPE. Concern : the fee structure is very high. Pl let me know any good film making schools with affordable fees either in US or Europe.

Q 2- : What will be the career path after learning the FILM making course. I mean I am ready to struggle few yrs with low compensation in that country from where I will complete the course.

Q3- : What is the way (entrance exam) to join film making colleges in US or Europe.

To be honest, I do not know much about film making courses abroad... Any recommendations or advice you can share in the comments would be a great help to this guy! And many others..

  1. Passion for cinema is the website where lot of independent and porfessional film makers write and discuss about films. You could read about films and ask few inspiring authors about your ambition.

  3. I am studying film making in NYFA new york .I was a software professional before ..
Before answering all your queries .Let me tell you one thing. Try to know yourself as in how serious and in what level your film making interest (note the word interest)does exist .To know that attend a crash course or try assisting for a week .If you still believe you have film maker in you then the following three answers might help you...

ME> Getting an admission in any abroad is not that difficult .infact you get a scholorship as well .Challenging job is to decide what is your area of specialization as in Editing,Cinematography or Direction. Because Here film making means all three areas and you have to make your own choice after first year . There are couple of better schools London school of drama,Sydney school for films,AFI ,USC,UCLA, NYU film making courses .All these offer a degree as well as master . I chose NYFA only for the reason i was interested in direction and three year course is shrink ed to one. In this school we get to direct 8 films and have to be part of nearly 20 movies ... So more hands on in less time ... Most of the students regret later joining here as they realise it is not their cup of tea. thats Why I suggested you to know about it so that you can save money. Only disadvantaage of NYFA is you cannot work !!!

Q 2- : What will be the career path after learning the FILM making course. I mean I am ready to struggle few yrs with low compensation in that country from where I will complete the course.

ME> This I may not able to answer as I am working on it still. But I tell you all you have to do is showcase your talent in student movies .Most of the best holly wood film makers were short film award winners .This is my way of entering into main stream. How ever there are many ways

Q3- : What is the way (entrance exam) to join film making colleges in US or Europe.
ME> Go to each university I mentioned above and get the information .Most of them expect GRE and nothing else.

I guess I tried answering all of your questions ... Do let me know if you need any help

  4. I went to pursue MS in Computer Science at USC (Uni. of Southern California) .. It has a huge department of film making and many famous filmmakers too hv passed out from USC like George Lucas(Star wars), steven spielberg etc to name a few ..

But aI guess USC is an expensive school but if you get a loan or a scholarship/aid in USC, it is the best school to study ..

  5. simbiosis at pune offers a comprehensive course in media and film making. duration is 3 years with work experience on projects and local film and ad agencies. if you want to learn some real film making in the chaos that is india, this is the best way. unless of course, your aim is migration. then go ahead and apply overseas. FTII has turned out some real talent. these days, every nook and cranny has centres that have courses in animation, editing, camera work, script writing, direction etc. all here in india. some of the best creative films are being made in india, look at the high standad of our ads and films. truly inspiring. film making's technical know-how has to be learned, but ideas and stories are part of an individual's personality and creativity that no institute can train you in.

  7. Q 1- I want to take admission in some good film making college in US or EUROPE.

May I ask why? FTII isn't good enough for you or you know within that you are not good enough for FTII?
By the way, was your software engg degree also thru the capitation fee route?
