Change is upon us...

It doesn't matter who wins or loses... but WE WON! WE WON!! As the sms doing the rounds goes: Dr Abdul Kalam's wish fufilled. India is a superpower in 20: 20! :)

And cricket has turned a corner. No erudite commentary about silly mid ons and silly mid offs. Any idiot can understand this game.

Ball maaro, bhaago.
Do a jig.
Hit some more.
AAA...........OUT!!!!!!

With Twenty20, cricket is catering to an attention deficit, exceed-our-expectations generation.

And for once, there is no chest-beating about losing our 'heritage'. If five day matches die out altogether, and one days become occasional fixtures - so be it.

If the stars we've known and loved must bow out and make way for a new constellation, so be it.

Change crept upon us - and we embraced it.

If only we could accept and move with change, in other spheres of life.

Every old building is not a heritage structure.
Every tradition can be updated.
Every dog has his day.

Change is good.
Going with the flow makes it better!

Speaking of change, there is something of that sort going on in my head. More on that, soon...

  1. I started to appreciate the gentlemen's game when I watched baseball for the first time. But now with cricket becoming baseballish, I've lost interest. Am I resistant to change?

  2. I'm fearing -
    "One Day" "Test" will Die........
    along with quality.....

  3. The other factor is when Yuvraj hit 6 sixes in one over. (feel bad for Broad, the baller). Same day, sensex crossed 16000 points...

  4. I agree with the post; the issue crept-up this morning when chatting with colleagues; i find 20/20 a brilliant new sporting concept; i used to totally love ODIs back in student days when time wasn't so precious (most likely coz i wasnt studious enuff!)But things change... over time I usually made it a point to watch only the first 10 and last 10 overs anyways coz that's where most of the action lies; So in a way it was 20/20 for me even b4 this tournamnet! Who wants to see 100 elegant ways to leave the ball anyways right?! Test Cricket is probably so named because it truly tests the viewer's patience! While most colleagues had a similar view; dere were 2 exceptions - a dinosaur who only enjoys "the finer nuances of test cricket" and the other, a pakistani colleague, who isn't going to like 20/20 for some time to come for obvious reasons!

  5. Yawn, don't understand all the hoopla over a fixed tournament. Oh come on! India and Pak in the Finals, so soon after the World Cup fiasco, and you think it wasn't fixed?! :)

  6. Long term i hope 2 formats survive - test cricket and 20/20. As a seasoned cricket fanatic, i still love test matches - they bring out different skills and the upswings / downswings are incredible. its a bigger test for the players / the skills on display / the strategies etc
    20/20 - you've already said it all...
i dont see how ODI's will survive long term...
However, having said that - the recent Ind Eng 7 match ODI series was a sellout / great cricket and the upcoming ODI's between Aus / Ind are also sold out...so its going to survive medium term at least....

  7. ahh now where is hockey and for that matter wher is World No1 V Anand or soon to be crowned World Champion V anand ther is more hype in spain abt this than india ...But yeah Twenty 20 is class class pure class I beg to differ Ms bansal i think test cricket will survive but ODI will be extinct coz whats the USP of ODI ..i dunnoo ..some one plz tell me why play ODI's now and BTW still hockey and football are played over 70 minutes and 90 minutes still and forever !!! compared to 3 hours of cricket !!! Remember SRK crooning abt 70 minutes of life and death or whatever !!! and 100 dash is now recorded at 9.73 seconds asfa powell .so we can still not kill other sports in india they still save time .Sorry Ms Bansal for being the dissenting view here i hope you apprecaite my point of view

  8. T20 may be a good concept as far as business is concerned. people don't have time to watch the 5 day tests or even a full one day game. but what's going on is not a game. It's become an entertainment business. Revenue oriented companies have changed the whole scenario. They want to generate money out of everything they see. If T20 is the future of cricket, what about the bowlers? pretty soon may be we can see a cricket match being held on an artificial pitch. Sports have other meanings as well apart from money making. It would be better that T20 remains a part of the game rather be aa future.

  9. Whatever..In india , spirit of sports has touched its bottom. And indian media has become super power behind it. If any team wins, We just cant stop praising them for days..If they lose, Software Enginees like us will surely get 20-30 SPAM mails for another few days.:)

  10. Can u compare the architecture of a glitzy mall, and an old classic monument? Obviously not, coz they are worlds apart, and its unfair to compare them. Same here with test cricket and twenty-20 cricket. Change is welcome, but not at the cost of something glorious and beautiful. Twenty20 is a marketer's brainchild, and lets not let money corrode this sport.

I have written a post on this topic on my blog.

  13. change is good definitely but that doesn't mean accept whatever new things come your way. i'm not at all an orthodox person resistant to change infact i'm quite the opposiste but would like to comment here like u spoke about the T20. the T20s are exciting n fun n new cool...but they can not replace our test matches n one dayers right.btw i liked that 'every dog has its day' the vodafone idea...that was interesting and funny.
