Email of the week - III

Well, make that emails. The third edition of this new feature on my blog consists of folks who've written to me asking for help in publicising their ventures. So this is a 'spread the good word' edition.

Hi Rashmi,

I am regular reader of your blog though never put in any comments. I represent a theater group Based in Bangalore called Version One Dot Oh!, a theatre group from Bangalore in short VODO. Our group consists of young professionals and students from different backgrounds. You can check out our blog @ http: vodo.blogspot.com.

So far we have done over 18 productions. We are traveling to Mumbai during the week of Feb 7-11 2007, performing two plays, "Shadows in the Dark" at the Mysore Association, Matunga and the other one "When the python's followed the Actor..." at Rang Sharada in Bandra.

Thanks in advance!!!

Cheers

Vijay Kumar Yenne
Production Manager

My comment: Sounds interesting. Maybe some of you would like to attend the shows. If you do, I'd love to have a review to publish in JAM!

Here are a couple of other requests:

hi,
I am the admin at www.siddharthfans.com fansite for Actor Siddharth of Rang De Basanti fame, we (a bunch of Engg. students) have started the site a few months back.

I would be pleased if you can link to the website somehow... thnks in advance

-Ram

My comment: Didn't know Siddharth is an MBA from S P Jain. Hmmm!

Lastly, Rajat Samanta from Army Institute of Management, Kolkata wanted to let junta know about the 'Indian B school Blog Hunt' at their annual fest Inferno.

You can submit a new Blog or add comments to existing ones over here

Will I be so nice week after week? No guarantees. I felt these were interesting bits of info... but I don't promise to put up any and all emails so please don't flood me with 'link to my blog' requests!

Have a nice day. Or night. Or whatever, depending on timezone.

Update:
So this time's emails are boring, huh? Well, folks that's the way life is. Public service is boring. That's why there's so little space in the media for it :)

But hey, this does expose the hypocrisy out there. When I critiqued an email I was exhorted to 'be positive'... What about being positive about 'being positive'?

Lastly, the number of negative comments posted on this blog far far exceed the positive ones. Not that I take it personally. But it's time some of you apply the principles you claim to believe in, before throwing e-pebbles at others!

  1. rashmi... this email of the week seemed like an interesting idea at first.. but now, it seems pretty drab...
feels more like, you are running out of content to write about!

  2. I kinda agree with rakuboy..
Ya..its good to read and all that...but we expect a lil' more from u..on "Issues"

  3. Rashmi, the 'critique' posts gets the most eyeballs. It is a voyueristic world :)

Share what you think is worth sharing about.

  4. I would say, when we speak up we have to be open to criticism. This time's e-mail of the week was better in my opinion as it was different from both the two previous additions!!
Infact i think your covering of only 3 such e-mails was not good enough, because i think those things mentioned there were definitely not known to many.

  5. Couple of things,

    - As rakuboy and vamsi said, you post are getting boring. Its better to take a break from blogging than disappointing readers with ordinary posts

    - Being a prominent blogger, I believe you should encourage frank feedback and criticism

    - Most important, it is these small people who read your blog and comment on it. Sometimes they may seek some help. Its the price of being popular. I guess its not prudent to make mockery of their emotions by posting their mails on the blog

    - As a regular reader, I hope you'll come up with something thats worth spending some time

  6. To clarify once and for all, I write a blog because I have thoughts or ideas which I wish to express. The readership is welcome, but incidental.

I will not tailor my blog to cater to readers. Because this is not a media vehicle which needs to follow the public pulse in order to 'sell more'. That's the beauty of this medium!

This does not mean I ignore feedback from you folks. But I fail to understand why some mythical higher standards need to be applied to me because I am a 'prominent blogger'.

Anyone who finds my blog boring is free to take a break from reading it :)

Lastly, I don't mind people approaching me for help but there are decent and polite ways to ask for help and rude/ unacceptable ways to do so. The email I put up was an example of the latter and if I have scared off some folks who operate from that mindset, well so be it.

Incidentally, 'prominent bloggers' have feelings as well!

  7. Hi Rashmi,

I loved your assessment of why one takes a liking to writing blogs in the first place.

I subscribe to different blogs and sift through them whenever time permits. Sometimes, the vitriolic nature of the comments that conclude a post often makes me wonder whether the purpose of the blog was to provoke discussion or incite more empty rhetoric.

    ------------------------

Love the blog, guys. It's the association with the blogger that one treasures. I've read this blog since its inception and might not have always agreed with what Rashmi writes. But it contributes to the identity of the blog and you can choose whether to like it or not. As far as boring posts are concerned, there are enough avenues available for everyone where one may find posts "thats worth spending some time"...
Remember it's easy being judgemental about one's personal likes and dislikes. But one's choices may not be the same as every other person.

  8. e-pebbles ... nice term :)

though what you've recieved most of the time have been full fledged e-brickbats!

and as 'dunno who' said, all publicity is good till the moolah keeps rolling in :)

  9. Some rant there Rashmi! I think people asking you to link their sites is nothing but asking for free publicity. But Ranting on them?

  10. I've been visiting your blog sometime now & I suppose I'm not the only soul to see the excellent quality in most of your posts.

    Hope this helps!

  11. Actually, I'm glad you put this post up. You were very nice with most of your responses. I get random emails from random foklks who are simply emailing me for link exchanges, even when my blog/site/interests have absolutely nothing to do with theirs. Earlier I took time to explain politely, Now I barely respond to all of them.

Isn't it rule #1 for any folks seeking pr/adv/mktg? Atleast a little bit of background search is to be expected!

Btw, I love the term, e-pebbles.
