Don't kick 'the habit'

I quite liked watching Desperate Housewives. It was aired at 10 pm on Sundays when it was first aired. Now, it's back. But hey, the timings been changed to 9 am Sundays. And I don't fancy waking up that early on a holiday - for anyone or anything.

Could be just me. But the point is, I was a loyal viewer who had the time 10 pm Sunday imprinted in my head. Now you go and change it - pretty high chances you'll lose me. But channels do it all the time.

Last Sunday I saw a pretty gripping episode of 'Criminal Minds' which was 'to be continued'. But guess what, the show isn't even there in tonight's TV listings.

Then there was the 11 pm to 12 midnight slot on Star World which featured Seinfeld, followed by Friends. Both 'old is gold' kind of shows which put you in a happy frame of mind before you drop off to sleep. Well, now they've been shifted to the 12 midnight to 1 am slot. And guess how little I get to see of them!

TVwaalon, samjha karo. Habits take time to develop. And messing around with them is injurious to your TRPs.

All it's gonna do is drive people like me - hitherto lazy and somewhat technophobic -to download your shows from the internet and consume them minus the advertising revenues you feed on. Don't say you haven't been warned...!

  1. :)!The viewership must be low.Hence, the change in timings.Else, they wouldn't mess with the timings. And if your loyal, you'll still wake up at 09am to watch it ;) !

  2. Good point of messing up the timings and losing the viewership.

But on second thoughts, these are the products for the channels and the product manager might want to treat them as cash cow/star like in consumer marketing. They might want to give prime slots to a star!!
The programs that you prefer may be cash cow or dog for them.

  4. The programmes you are talking abt are evergreen programmes... generally used as filler to retain some viewership in that slot before something new and good comes up...

anything fresh is always going to be more preferred than reruns of reruns... but as these reruns still hold some charm they try to find a place for them...

  5. You're right - look at Lost - by the time Star aired it in India, Season 1 was over in the US, and I saw the first episode on TV - went to some shady shop off the Causeway and got the entire season. Thanks to Palika I have access to pretty much all the TV shows I want, and great shows like Carnivale don't even come to India.
Pretty much the only program I watch on TV nowadays is Jay Leno.

  6. As for TRP rating, if some viewers are lost, some more are gained. They are smart people and they know their timings better..

  7. Rashmi,

This is the same for Star Trek [Enterprise]. They have moved it from Sat 10 pm to 12 am. How on earth can I watch it at 12 am midnight? We have a six day week and Sunday mornings are for family visit to grocery etc... and the Star monkeys have done this trick.

  9. I don't know if this was ever discussed on this forum ( I am too lazy to search on this blog :)) or you ever wrote a blog about pay channels showing advertisements.
I don't understand the logic behind it. I would like to pay for the content that is being shown on TV but not the ads. In the US and other countries, the pay channels don't have any advertisements or even if they do, it is to a very small extent. Maybe 5 mins of ads for every 1 hour of content. I don't exactly know but it is quite less.
Over here I get to see more of advertisements and less of content. Why doesn't the I&B ministry make a law regarding this? I don't want to pay a friggin Rs400/- and watch Maggi ads on my TV.

  10. Hi,

The thing which you commet on TV CHANNELS, mostly they are popularizing the cash cow advertising and the channel are slowly by slowly lowering down. So make a habit and enjoy it. The unwant channel are developing more by advertising. Even if i sit in front of tv i become bored by seeing more advertising rather than serial.

  12. FYI: They're showing the reruns of Desperate Housewives, it isn't the latest season, hence the odd timing.
