Why we need to crib

Nandan Nilekani, in an interview to Businessweek magazine explains the Indian way of getting things done.

Businessweek: Things are happening much faster in China, where they build infrastructure so rapidly.
Nilekani: It's going to happen, but not the way it happens in China. In China, a bunch of guys get in a room and decide to build a 16-lane highway from Shanghai to Beijing, and it's going to happen.

There's no way that will happen in India. It's too chaotic and argumentative. But what's going to happen is these 200 planes will be ordered, they won't land. They'll be circling. Everybody will get [very angry].

Finally, there will be such public outcry that the airports will get built. It's a different model. But it's a model.

And hopefully a day will come when we won't need to get angry anymore...

  1. what are you guys talking about?

corruption is the grease that moves the wheels of India... imagine, without that extra Rs. 50 that lazy clerk would probably take 17 weeks to process your little applications...

  2. We often tend to think that China is doing better because of an authoritative regime where good decisions are taken and implemented instantly... But there are many more things which make China attractive for investment...low cost, large domestic economy for instance...and China was bound to succeed the moment you remove the restrictions..and the Chinese took many years to lift them...why havent other authoritative economies like North Korea etc. succeeded...
I don't think the issues have so simple solutions...

  3. The MAIN problem is parents. Parents are too CHEAP in India. They want to reduce costs on everything even if it means wasting a lot a time. The children think that money is more important and thus do everything to get it.People should be more loose with their money. They want the best stuff for less money. That attitude won't get us anywhere.
