IT workers - least satisfied?

A pop up on rediff informs me that 'everyone is quitting naukri'. Timesjobs claims it has 3,073, 680 active resumes in its database vs 2,72, 889 resumes with the 'nearest competitor' (naukri.com?).

What's astounding is the number of 'IT resumes' they claim to have. 820, 092!

Last year Nasscom estimated there are 1.1 million Indiansworking in IT and ITES. That number would have grown since then - but still, it's hard to believe that 2 out of 3 IT professionals have put their resumes on Timesjobs. Or any job portal for that matter.

But even if the numbers are inflated, as a proportion of job switchers, IT workers top the list. Are they truly dissatisfied, or just more net savvy than the rest of the population? Perhaps a lethal combination of both!

  1. The fact that people put up multiple resumes on multiple site is the cause for the huge number of resumes. The actual number of people (unique ones) would be much lower than the quoted figure

  2. There is one more factor apart from dissatisfaction and being net-savvy..
The demand for IT professionals is very high and hence opportunities are many...
With hikes of 30-50% switching jobs is the fastest way to grow followed by working hard :)

  3. As vaidya said above, switching jobs is indeed rewarding. Not only that, indicating an intention to switch leads to people being offered incentives to stay back. So the game goes on.

  4. nothing surprising, i work in an IT company and almost 100% of the people i knw have put their CVs on job portals.

It is just done to keep a reality check on their market value, for salary negotiations and to jump when they r given a slip in the onsite posting.

  5. Of course IT workers are the most challenged when it comes to effective comunication, leaving them with only this option to draw attention. Plus the tribe desperately seeks attention and esteem from senior management, which in most cases doismisses IT as backend. So again, showing that a lot of other companies want them becomes the best way to signal their value to the company as well as measure their own self worth!

  6. most of the resumes on these portals (i think) are not active. those people must have posted their resumes when searching for job and later it felt unnecessary to remove them from the portal

however, your point (about being unsatisfied) is very much valid as i have felt (& heard numerous times) that 3-4 years is the maximum time you can spend in a typical IT firm.

my senior gave me this funda when i started job was "you cannot grow vertically in this industry, you'll have to take horizontal path for a good career growth " ... switch, switch, switch then come back to your original company

(ps - moi is still working happily with my company for last 3 years)

  7. The reasons there are more IT resumes than any other are twofold:

    A) Those in the IT field will certainly be capable of uploading and submitting their resumes online.

    B) There is very little vertical movement in the IT sector. The only way you get a significant hike is by jumping ship, as you are offered 1.5 times (or whatever) your previous salary to lure you away.

  8. I guess there could be other factors at play, too. Intellectual boredom is a primary concern. I have heard about friends deciding to sit at home rather than do the same-code-new-day routine at their job.

  9. Here are some reasons TimesJobs is claiming what they claim:

    1) Two Step Resume Upload: A very unquie way of not wasting your time filling all those big forms.

    2) Upload your resume and win ipod/gizmos: Yes, i remember some uploading the resume becoz i thought i wud get lucky with the lady luck and win the ipod.

    3) Duplicate resumes: Both Naukri & Times share atleast 65% of duplicate resumes. I have my resume on both naukri (my personal fav) and times (for the ipod).

Now, it remains to be seen if times has mentioned this or not !

  10. IT workers are caught up in a frenzy of job swapping for finding greener pastures to graze on, some wanna find fatter wallets.
