Anyway Hindus are too gentle or scared to protest the way muslims protest so anybody can take any liberties with Hinduism. And it is a fact that during the 1930's women in the west were also illtreated when they were widowed...just that nobody likes to point out anything bad about the west or anything other than India and Hindus. And by the way, Hindu women today are probably the most pampered women in the world...almost as much or more than western women...where they have all the opportunity of education and jobs...but no responsibility to provide for the family or to make the marriage work...Hindu women have become as bad as western women in divoricing and harassing husbands for profit...and India is as stupid and rotten as the west when it comes to safeguarding men from rotten women...India is still in the medieval mindset that women are angels and need to be protected from men. I am as unhappy to be a Hindu man as Rashmi is to be a Hindu woman....and the reasons are purely legal....maybe this will lead to a new practice among hindu men to marry south east asian women or so...and it might enter hindu religion as a ritual...redrajeshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03037713065029157644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1160118250513590382006-10-06T12:34:00.000+05:302006-10-06T12:34:00.000+05:30and frankly speaking, i never expected something o...and frankly speaking, i never expected something of this quality form a Deepa Mehta.merajhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14648109677002961446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1160117958306494642006-10-06T12:29:00.000+05:302006-10-06T12:29:00.000+05:30i watched the movie with my mother and younger sis...i watched the movie with my mother and younger sister. and throughout the movie, all the three pair of eyes were WATERy. its one of the most finely crafted movies of the recent times and i wont be surprised if it goes on to win foreign film oscars this year(its Canada's official entry).

deepa mehta is a self-cofessed loyalist of Satyajit Ray, but it had never come out so beautifully and blatantly. be it the shots of Chuhiya and Kalyani running in the rains (reminiscent of Durga & Apu in Pather Panchali)or the beautiful rain sequences laced with rehmans score, or the character of the laddoo-craving old woman (much like the old aunt in Pather Panchali craving for Guavas, which Durga the young girl gets for her).

rehmans score is just about perfectly matched with the visuals and the whole experience is magical.

the real beauty of the movie (as is true for any great work of art, atleast in my view) is that it ends with a HOPE for the little Chuhiya (and in the larger picture for women/mankind), who you as a viewer begin to love truly.

the only weak link of the movie to me was John Abraham as Narayan. another actor like a KK Menon or even Abhishek bacchan would have done a better job.

so, finally at the end of those almost 3 hours, all 3 of us, a man and two women had a huuuuuge lump in the throat. we couldnt speak to each other for the next 15 minutes, until a good cup Orange Pekoe eased the situation.merajhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14648109677002961446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159853845384945102006-10-03T11:07:00.000+05:302006-10-03T11:07:00.000+05:30Great post, excellent review...very thoughtful...I...Great post, excellent review...very thoughtful...I agree it's not daragatory but it definitly is interesting because it draws a controversy between faith and "social progress" (regardless of faith and regardless of what the progress is).

It's a very interesting film in that way.

I agree the cinemotography and acting is absolutly excellent. This role was a huge shift from his normal commercial roles and I felt he played it to a tee. He played the role of a "new-age" revolutionary very well, and like Lisa Ray, his acting abilities have taken a huge leap forward.

Undoubtedly, many inhumane practices have been opportunistically linked with our religion and social reform is slowly but surely changing perceptions. I like your "glass half full" view of life. If we don't have hope, nobody is going to be moved to question the status quo.

Top effort again.Ayush Trivedihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09172484355139580612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159624055140533612006-09-30T19:17:00.000+05:302006-09-30T19:17:00.000+05:30..and before any befuddled liberals jump on me...i.....and before any befuddled liberals jump on me...
i don't like her the way i don't like Whoopi Goldberg. can't really pinpoint one reason.

her movies are a different story; i don't like them, but can pinpoint the reasons.

and i haven't seen water yet.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159622995545724272006-09-30T18:59:00.000+05:302006-09-30T18:59:00.000+05:30I don't like Deepa Mehta's movies much..I also thi...I don't like Deepa Mehta's movies much..

I also think she is what Michael Moore is in the US - everyone inside his own country loves to hate him, while the ones outside (and the inside outsiders) hate to hate him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159610388698170812006-09-30T15:29:00.000+05:302006-09-30T15:29:00.000+05:30Actually atitudes have not changed all that much i...Actually atitudes have not changed all that much in many sections of Indian society, only technology has made it easier to kill girls before they are born!inetinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10501715584435766922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159603208689952202006-09-30T13:30:00.000+05:302006-09-30T13:30:00.000+05:30It's been a long time (say 6 months ago) since I'd...It's been a long time (say 6 months ago) since I'd seen this glowing movie. It's an absolute gem - tugs your heart and speaks volumes. I've seen it over and over again and reading your review I was reminding myself of this wonderful aesthetically shot marvel. No wonder I am going to watch it again.

Infact I felt the casting was fabulous. Chuiya was very very lovable - the innocence on her face showing. One thing you forgot to mention was the music and the background score -- Rahman at his best. The background score simply lifts up the film and all the songs enhance the proceedings poignantly. Time for me to catch up once more with Water. No wonder it has been nominated from Canada for the Oscars - we Indians have something to learn from here, something to be ashamed of. When are we going to let there be freedom of art and expression???Adityahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07901224152771254609noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159592436254162582006-09-30T10:30:00.000+05:302006-09-30T10:30:00.000+05:30I'm going to watch it too!I'm going to watch it too!vita86loverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08080712772541184695noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9605787.post-1159563068796065032006-09-30T02:21:00.000+05:302006-09-30T02:21:00.000+05:30Had seen this movie quite some time ago at the MAM...Had seen this movie quite some time ago at the MAMI festival.
