Saawariya vs Om Shanti Om

Saawariya.. tintintinaning
Saawariya.. tintintinaing
Saawariya.. o ho o ho
Saaaawariya......

This is my daughter's favourite song right now. It's not mine for sure.

The big Bollywood showdown this Diwali is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya vs Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om. And in a way it's a battle of Youth vs Experience.

Saawariya uses one of the oldest formulas in Bollywood's book: launching a new lead pair. There are a number of big stars who were born that way:
- Bobby (Rishi Kapoor, Dimple)
- QSQT (Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla)
- Maine Pyaar Kiya (Salman, Bhagyashree)

Note: Technically MPK was not Salman's first film , and QSQT wasn't Juhi's either but whatever they did before that has been long forgotten. Everyone remembers these as unki pehli picture.

Then there were actors like Kumar Gaurav who made a smashing debut with Love Story. Neither Kumar nor his heroine Vijeta Pandit made it big in Bollywood subsequently par kam se kam ek picture to hit hui!

The 'young love story' is actually a favourite way to launch star sons. I think it fell out of favour when the last chappie launched this way - Abhishek Bachchan - did not make it for about 4 years.

But that was a while ago. India is once again ready for a new chocolate hero and new candyfloss heroine. And a new generation of star kids is ready to be launched.

Lekin there are interesting differences this time. For the first time, a star daughter is being launched with full blessings and fanfare from the family. Poor Karisma had to fight for her career while even Kareena took a backseat to Abhishek in Refugee. This time, Ranbir and Sonam are getting equal footage and so are both sets of parents.

What's more, although either of the Kapoors could have produced a film to launch their kid they have put their eggs in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's basket. And both sides have formed this mutual admiration society.

At the music launch of Saawariya Bhansali gushed: "I am so touched to see Krishnaji here" and made glowing references to Raj Kapoor. While Ranbir came on stage and said in a small and humble voice:"I am grateful to "sir" for considering me worthy of this project." Vagairah vagairah.

Makes sense for both sides. Bhansali has this grand and opulent cinematic vision which India loves. While a debut pair which can generate so much free press and public curiosity can only boost the film. And lead to profitable though bizarre marketing tie ups like this one.

On the other hand, there's 'Om Shanti Om'. Also a love story but with a 'reincarnation' twist. And a reincarnated Shahrukh 'six pack' Khan. And the whole '70s era reincarnated as 'retro cool', actually.

OSO also has a new heroine - Deepika Padukone - but clearly she is not the USP of the film. In fact - in an exact opposite strategy - Om Shanti Om is pitching the star card heavily. The song 'Deewangee', currently on air, features '31 top stars'.

Bottomline: OSO is old wine in a new bottle while Saawariya is new wine in an old bottle. If I had to choose just one I'd go for 'Om Shanti Om'. But then... I'm old.

P.S> Regardless of who 'wins' the box office battle, I think Ranbir will go on to do very well. But hey, I thought Rishi Kapoor (in Karz) was really cool. And Ranbir does have a jhalak of Rishi... Before he graduated in size and had to hide behing horrendous checked sweaters!

  1. Bhansali v/s Farah Khan

Bhansali is the critic's director. He makes movies not to make profits (well, not in the literal sense), but he has always been critic's favorite bashing boy. His first film, 'Khamoshi' bombed, critics panned it. ''Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' did well and earn profits, courtesy Salman-Ash affair had created the marketing hoopla. 'Devdas'with SRK/Ash and a ageing Madhuri did well to survive but was again panned by the wise men.

On the other hand, we have Farah Khan. Here's a director who believes in making out-and-out bollywood masala movies especially keyed to make profits in india and abroad. Backed by SRK, she probably has the astutest marketing brain on the block.

So, like you, I'd go for OSO for these reasons:
    a) New and experienced team (as compared to sonam/ranbir and a new music director monty)
    b) Deepika Padukone: she is the next big thing in bollywood.
c)Recarnation movies are somehow "ek mein do" kinda movies. The first half has a story from diff era and after the interval, a new era with a new story. How fascinating is that?

  2. Regardless of which movie becomes a hit, the Indian film industry will always be populated by nepotist shitheads will continue to market mediocrity to the dullard masses.

This obvious dead-end however, will never stop the nonstop exodus of idiot chumps from small towns and big dreams who come to Bombay hoping to be the next big thing.

The odds are whimsically low to begin with, but these it's made impossible because of these power-brokering dynasties who will promote their worthless brood with massive PR campaigns, events, fashion shows, magazine covers, TV interviews, and a whole lot of ballcurry discussion on TV channels .

In a country where the Gandhis ruled for 40 of 60 years, what can you expect? This whole country is full of nepotist shits wives holding the keys to power.

  3. a. I was going through the Saawariya http://www.saawariyafilm.com/ .. it seems to be like the whol trailer is on the website... and Om Shanti Om website http://www.omshantiomfilm. com/ - it takes too much time to load... I am not on Dial Up!

    b. The families specially the fathers of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor are involved in promoting the movies, where is Prakash Padukone? Is it the trump card for OSO?

    c. I would go first for Saawariya, fresh faces and looks to be more grander with the visuals. Complete visual delight.

  4. Just one small thing- Shobana Samarth launched Nutan in Hamari Beti (a film she produced for Nutan)close to sixty years ago, and ten years later had Tanjua debuting in Chhabili( a film she directed for Tanuja. And both Nutan and Tanuja did decently in Hindi cinema - Nutan, at least, I think, can be classified as one of the all time greats.
So, while star daughter launches are more rare- they are definitely not new. In fact, while I am not certain, I wouldn't be surprised if Nutan's launch was actually the first case of a star child launch- male or female. I can't offhand think of an earlier case than this, at any rate.

  5. When it is a festive season,esp...Diwali, nothing can beat a deadly combo of Shahrukh and family kinda movie(kkhh, dil to pagal hai,k3g...)which Farah khan promises to purvey, and also as we can make out from the promos,But...

the opponent on the other court is a master mind! His beauteous lightnings in Devdas, and magnificent
presentation of Gujarati culture in HDDCS, with KAIPOCHHCHE and kites, have left no stone unturned to get the top place in the festive movies!
hmmm... But this guy,Bhansali, experiments a lot.We Have seen Karan Johar going downhill after his heydays. And no doubt HDDCS was more appreciable than DEVDAS(which came after HDDCS).So, Bhansali has degraded a bit! And now he is with two new faces!
Any how if he dont even buzz from his position, and if he gives, if not more , the same QUALITY of movie as before, than FArah and Shahrukh, both best friends will share a hard time together!
Indian public understands cinema , and will not get flown with commercial stuff only.

Comparing the debut of both directors , no doubt, Farah gets a high. And it was astonishing to see the choreographer, Farah presenting a well wrapped movie.Farah, surprised many. And if she give the same QUALITY of surprise(positively),if not more ,in OSO,then Bhansali can get a trauma in head!
Bottom line:it a competition between Qualities in a sense!Just both the players have to maintain their respective Q's.

Both movies will smash a hit on the box office!

    ReplyDelete
  6. And ya... I will go for both! It has been long time watching two good movies at the same time ;)!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Both the movies are gonna be a treat to watch. There is no doubt on that.

I am an SRK fan.. and trust me,I am biased on him and love him loads.

Getting back to the movies- both the movies are love stories and both believe it or not, have the theme- waiting for love attached to em. Saawariya mind you is not completely backing on the new faces.. it has Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee also.

OSO... is completely a masala bollywood movie... what with Deepika being Shown in the complete 70's helen's costume of Piya tu.... its been ages since an outright masala bollywood movie released.

Talking about the music of both the movies-

Saawariya- The title track is 2.5 mins long... has beautiful notes and other songs that are on air are also good... but then I dont think that they have the mass appeal.

OSO- When dard-e- disco was aired on TV for the first time... it became a total sensation. The title track of the movie is a complete party anthem... and wats more, the video of the song has over 30 big film stars shaking their legs. Farah- Makes the entire Industry dance to her beats...!!! Literally.

Now, as far as publicity goes- OSO is definately getting more publicity... coz of the various brands that SRK endorses. As far as lauching new kids on the block and parents promoting them, Prakash Podukone... is a sports star and not a Film star like parents of Ranbir and Sonam...though I really admire both sets of parents for their sheer hardwork in promoting their kids. But then, both Ranbir and Sonam will have to work really hard to get out of their parents shadow, (remember Ab's Baby...he is still compared with his dad and now he has an ove ambitious and overtly successful wife..)

Its gonna be Clash of the titans... may the best man oops woman...win...

  9. random comments from me: i don't really think i could sit through saawariya if it wasn't for the pretty blue background and gold scrolls and frankly i want to know where "Jab We Met" stands in all this b/c it's my personal pick of the month.
and what about madhuri's outfit in the title song of "Aaja Nachle" - where can I buy that as I would look stuuuuunning in it.
    thanks

  10. Rashmi, OSO may be having the backing of SRK but look what the PR guys of Saawariya are upto - they defintely have taken blogging/micro blogging to new heights by reaching out on twitter - http://twitter.com/Saawariya

they are definitely managing to mobilize masses by reaching out in an 'innovative' way.

  11. You forgot Kaho Na Pyar Hain(Hrithik Roshan and Amisha Patel) in that list..which was also runaway hit.

  12. I'm looking forward to both actually. It's almost like a war here

  13. Yes, it will be great to see what these movies has in store for the audience. As some TV channels also highlightred, how both the lead heroes have gone ahead and doing skin show in the movies. My 4 year old keeps saying, mamma.. in the Saawariya movie, the hero is nangu-pangu.. he refer to towel clad Ranbir Kapoor as nangu-pangu ;)

  14. I agree with your comment. I rather not choose any of the wines and go on to promote " No Smoking" for i love the imagination used on this one.

  17. sorry for an orthogonal comment but it's in good interest of JAM.
Who employed a moron like Amit kaundinya to review this kind of a film (NO SMOKING)? He may be good at reviewing typical Bollywood kind of movies but not this one.
Looks like he doesn't have any idea about world cinema. Actually you don’t need the exposure to world cinema. It’s just that you probably need a better IQ to grasp such kind of movies.
I expect Rashmi to have better reviewers at JAM for this kind of movies.

  18. The timings of the two movies-Saawariya and OSO reminds me of another two blockbusters of their time-- Lagaan and Gadar. To cut a long story short both of them went on to become cinematic milestones and had their own pluses n minuses. My hunch is that both OSO n Saawariya would become superhits and would've their own USPs. I am still not decided which one I would watch first... but in all probability I would watch both of them within the first week ;-)
More than Win-Lose I think its a Win-Win situation for both the flicks... SRK has his own magnetism and Bhansali is a master story teller as well...
Time to raise a toast to the flavor of the season...

Hmmmnnn...Well..like always, the opinions of cine-goers stand divided...owing to obvious preferences. Star kids or not, a 31-star-ensemble-music-number or not....the fact is, both movies stand to make the most during this festive season!

    Nice blogspace!!

  21. a pakistani's views here

i think both film will give profitable feedbacks to their Directors, but in my view Saawariya will win more Awards then Om Shanti Om on technical basis i.e(designing, sets, sound etc).Because Sanjey Bhai proved black horse after releasing of Black, i was thinking before Black that this time Bhansali will lose the Game but he wins with a great score So thats why even he is coming in ground with new players but he knows where the talent is hidden in Actor and how to put it out.And as director Farah baji couldn't defeat him.

But Om Shanti Om will win the fans range. i will go with SHAH jee. Pakistan loves u Shah Rukh

  22. OSO would be a bumper hit of the decade. SRK is looking all the more rocking in this movie and songs are fabulous.

On the contrary, other movie is all made up in studio where they are showing that it is night. But the songs of both the movie are good especially Saawariya's title track and OSO's Ajab Si.......

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would go for OSO.
SRK rocks in very movie these days and in this movie also he will rock.
He has that charisma and energy to stand against any Hollywood production.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i havent read the reviews or previews about both the films but i seriously didnt like the picturisation of the male protagonists.

in Om..., there has been much hype about the new macho look of shahrukh. but tell you, i am not impressed. his much talked about six abs look nothing more than when a thin man grows cuts in his body after rigorous exercise.

in Saawaria, i dont know what inspired Ranbir to show off in the white blanket. and even though he did it, why the scene where he falls from the chair and a major part of his legs are seen. good meat for women and the gay community.

  25. Yesterday, I was checking for online tickets for both the movies in PVR, INOX and others in Bangalore and found that the ticket rates were almost same in PVR. But in INOX, ticket rate for OSO was higher than Saawariya.

You should have seen how fast the tickets were getting sold especially the evening and night shows...It happened twice with me that previously it was showing "1 ticket left" and after clicking next.. "housefull"...

  29. Ok if you are a 5 year old, you would like OM shanti Om more than Saawariya. Yes OSO has a few laughs in the first half, but Saawariya is definitely the better movie. If you have ever experienced love and have half a brain the choice would be clear.

And yes OSO will be a huge hit coz 80% of the population has peas for brains.

    ReplyDelete
  30. OSO is an example of selling.

  32. i smhw get the feel that Saawariya is not getting its due credit. SLB is one of the greatest movie makers, his intense ideas and thoughts which makes movies larger than life is what we have to look for. Comedy and Romance is not every directors cup of tea. you can get away making a "kichdi" movie, but making smthing something like HDDS, Black takes real effort from a director. OSO is differnt no doubt, but I will watch Saawariya as well.

  36. Isn't it obvious that given a choice people will go and watch OSO. I mean, Saawariya is same old typical Bhansali flick with great sets and beautiful ladies prancing about. Atleast OSO has something different this time. I am in no way applying that OSO is a good movie. You will just won't get bored while watching and that Dewangee song saw a rare moment in Bollywood film industry where Farah manages to rope in almost all the famous stars.

  37. Timepass movie. 70s recreation in the 1st half is entertaining. It's like the 70s we see in old films come to life though in an exaggerated and comic way. The second half at first is mostly Shahrukh's buffoonery but the last 30 minutes tug at one's heart.

Deepika Padukone, what to say, she is really a dream girl. For a newcomer from the modelling world she acts fairly good. And while dancing and in general her expressions are perfect. In the last scene she's very intense. She's here to stay folks.

  40. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is miles and miles above and beyond these khans(sajid/farah/sharukh). he is making classical stuff: movies with values and class.

on the other hand farah khan/sajid khan / himesh reshamiya crop is the reflection of todays time producing 'hits!' which are mindless have no values or class and no ethics, are cheap (in conduct also).

especially these khans have hidden agenda of insulting high indian values which were usually highlighted in olden movies. she has mischevaously omitted making fun of frequently used muslim belifes (like 786). for one they are muslims and second muslims will srew there ass real good.

what are we getting back from muslims for giving them equal opportunity in every field in this country??? mf hussain, farha khan, daud, list is endless...

    boycott these mo**f***s.

    ======================

farah khan and her nanga bhai sajid khan are making cheap thrills.

farah khan and her muslman friend salman khan, made fun of all indian values which were highlighteed in old movies. what is farah khan and her nanga bhai making? cheap flicks. low grade products. cheap direction, story, dialogues, script.

i am asking all indians to boycott this movie.

shame on her. may she go to hell for all her muslim agenda.
